It is one of the largest marine creatures and is classified as a peaceful species that poses no threat to humans. It is also listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as an endangered species.
The whale shark enjoys legal protection due to its vital role in maintaining the ecological balance in the seas, especially in the Red Sea, which is considered one of the most important marine environments globally.
Two days ago, videos circulated on social media showing a number of fishermen catching a whale shark and handling it in a manner described as brutal and inhumane.
The video sparked widespread outrage among social media users and those interested in marine life, especially since the creature in question is a rare and endangered species. Immediately, Dr. Manal Awad, Acting Minister of Environment, directed the Nature Protection Sector and the relevant coastal protection authorities to coordinate and verify the incident.
The investigation led to the identification and arrest of the fishermen involved within hours, after confirming their responsibility for the reported incident. The suspects were detained and are being referred to the competent legal authorities to take the necessary measures in accordance with environmental and marine life protection laws.
