A man in his 40s has become the first person to leave hospital with a total artificial heart, St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, where the operation was performed, announced Wednesday.

The hospital said in a statement that the patient holds the record for the longest time spent with an artificial heart, "a major step towards the future of artificial heart technology."
